Soil is an organic or mineral layer (other than consolidated bedrock) thicker than four inches occurring naturally on the Earth's surface. This layer has been subjected to the factors of soil development: climate, vegetation, living organisms, topography and the properties of its parent material over a sufficient period of time to cause changes in its chemical and physical composition.
