Digital Data 2021-0027

Author(s) Date 2022-02-23

Between 2002 and 2007, the Alberta Geological Survey initiated a project to scan and digitize water well geophysical logs (e.g., resistivity, spontaneous potential, gamma ray, density) from what is now Alberta Environment and Parks (AEP) water well data holdings. Casual and student staff scanned hard copy logs systematically by NTS (National Topographic System) map sheet starting in the Cold Lake area. Scanned logs were digitized into Log ASCII Standard (LAS) version 2. The data product (zipped file) from this effort was published in 2014 and contained 8 763 LAS files and a tab-delimited index file. At the time of publication, these well logs represented more than half of the total number of geophysical logs available in the AEP data holdings.

In 2018, the Alberta Geological Survey resumed the scanning and digitizing exercise to capture any unscanned geophysical logs, which would include logs added since 2007. Like the previous effort, scanning was completed by casual staff and students while digitization to LAS was provided by contractors, resulting in a total of 5 503 LAS files added to AGS data holdings. These files were combined with the previously published LAS files and duplicates were removed, resulting in a combined dataset of 14 074 LAS files. These files represent nearly all geophysical logs in the data holdings that are not otherwise duplicated in Alberta Energy Regulator (AER) records. Please note that a small number of geophysical logs were either missing, illegible, or improperly scanned, and could not be digitized to LAS. As such, this dataset represents a nearly complete collection of accessible geophysical logs in the AEP data holdings as of the end of the scanning phase of the work in spring 2019. A tab-delimited index file is included with the LAS files in the zipped file data product.
